How to Teach English to My Children

There are many ways to teach English to your children and I will outline some of them there.

The most important thing to remember is to have fun!
If children learn that English is fun from the beginning, they will probably learn more quickly and with less resistance in the future.

When you introduce them to learning English, do not tell them that they are "learning English". Just start to incorporate different games, cartoons and activities into daily life which involve English as well.

I taught a group of 13, 5 year olds last summer and here is what I learnt from that experience.

#1 Most of the time you will speak in Spanish. This is ok. The more you speak in English the better though, but make the transition slowly.

#2 Try to get them interested in something or someone that is English. Maybe a cartoon character that is English (Winnie the Poo...etc). Then you can explain to them how Winnie the Poo says hello...what he calls different things etc.

#3 Make English your little secret. Children love to think that they know something that others don't. If you are trying to teach them the colors, you can tell them that Winnie the poo doesn't call _____ (a color in your native language), he calls it red.

#4 Lots of songs. Get a good course book with a CD with songs to sing along with. Be prepared. You are going to repeat these songs over and over again and your children will love them, but they will drive you a little crazy after 5 or 6 times.

#5 Get DVD's or video's of your children's favorite cartoons or programs and put them in English with English subtitles. The more that you children hear English on a daily basis, the better their pronunciation, vocabulary and comprehension will be.

-Play games (guess who, happy families, cards etc) in English.
